A little bit of summer on a cold day

Task #23
I probably gained the most from revisiting professional websites, but the most enjoyable task was editing pictures with Picnik. I had fun exploring everything in Webolution. I look forward to using the new information to assist people in the library.

Task #22
My favorite website is www.shira.net. I have used it to locate dance instructors, workshops, and performances in 3 different states. I have also visited the website for information about music and dance terminology. I start every morning with a visit to www.cnn.com and www.nytimes.com. I have a difficult time finding the motivation to try new recipes without a pretty picture to go along with it, so thanks for the introduction to www.tastespotting.com.

I used Picnik to edit this photo. Now it is blog worthy.

Task #17
Sales people may hoard the secrets to their success, but librarians love to share information! That’s what I like about Infopeople.org. The archived webcasts offer free training opportunities, as well as a chance see new ways to share information in presentations. This task introduced me to Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki. Sometimes I wonder how my goals and projects compare with the things other librarians in the same position are doing. The Best Practices Wiki eases the isolation and provides a huge range of ideas for programs and outreach. I will definitely be returning.

Task #20
The Building Department for Mesa County, found on the County page, is a great source for information about permits and building requirements. According to the link to socioeconomic data, GJ is in for a big jump in population between 2010-1020. Overall, the county page is a good place to find current local information. The Colorado webpage makes it easy to locate information about Occupational/Professional Licensing requirements, a question asked by many patrons. I spent time mapping my neighborhood for sex offenders from the Colorado webpage. Hooray, no violent sex offenders living across the street! Life’s not all bad. I love Palisade’s page. It’s such a busy community, but the town’s page makes it easy to find out what is going on.

Task # 19
I got a whopping 90%. I overlooked question 7. I think circulation procedures was a good topic to include. Just another reminder that I need to spend a little more time cross training there. I think the quiz should also reinforce the idea the we DO NOT need to decorate the desks with printed copies of all the available information.

This is a converted URL for a merchandise shop from a Middle Eastern Dance performance couple, Leyla and Roland.

It was a simple process, though I could not figure out how to convert it to just the text. I converted a photo from a jpg to a bmp file. It was quick and easy. I am sure it would be a great tool for those in need, but I don’t think I have had a patron ask me about converting files.

Task # 16
I spent a big chunk of one graduate level class focusing on Koa, an open source integrated library system. The class was so poorly coordinated, I came away confused and a little hesitant to explore anything open source. I had heard great things about OpenOffice, but had never investigated it before Webolution. Office Writer looks to be just as functional as MS Word, though I did not compare every feature. The tool bar for Office Writer actually looks a little simpler to navigate. The promotion of open source software parallels the promotion of equal access to information that is at the core of librarianship.
